Yet, as the digital world expands, its physical footprint is creating a new kind of friction in local communities.

The Quest for “Near-Perfect” Reliability
To the average user, the “cloud” feels ethereal and always available. To Amazon, maintaining that illusion requires a staggering amount of physical redundancy. To meet the power-hungry demands of generative AI—which requires significantly more processing power than traditional digital services—Amazon has requested authorization to install 286 emergency generators at the Falls facility: 283 powered by natural gas and three by diesel.
This massive backup fleet is a “power insurance policy.” While Amazon’s global ambitions are even larger elsewhere—such as the “Project Ranier” site in Indiana, which spans 30 buildings and consumes 2.2 gigawatts—the Falls facility highlights a growing regional tension.
While local utility PECO suggests rates won’t rise, the PJM wholesale market, which manages the grid across 13 states, has already seen rate increases driven by the growth of these energy-gulping servers.
