RE: Nonprofit Reclassification to For-Profit and Sale of Chandler Hall Health Services
NOTE: Edit as necessary to reflect your personal experience using Chandler Hall facilities, especially regarding health care, the YMCA gym, and day care facilities.
I write today to vehemently oppose:
- The reclassification of Chandler Hall Health Services, located at 99 Barclay Street in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, from a nonprofit to a for-profit continuing care senior living community, unless any for-profit buyer is legally bound by the conditions of Chandler Hall’s current Quaker-based mission statement and operating practices, including the leases with the YMCA and child care services.
- The sale of Chandler Hall Health Services to the proposed buyer, CIG/99 Barclay PropCo, LLC. A commercial real estate development project would not serve the best interests of Chandler Hall residents, employees, Newtown Borough, Newtown Township, Bucks County or Pennsylvania unless the buyer is bound by conditions preserving the current Quaker-based mission and operating practices, including the YMCA and child care leases, as well as published capital improvements to Chandler Hall’s infrastructure.
Chandler Hall Health Services, established in 1973, is a multifaceted community institution providing residential care, hospice and palliative care. It has developed from a senior living facility into a comprehensive community services organization offering infant and child daycare, a YMCA branch for teens and adults, and complete residential senior living care.
[MODIFY AS NEEDED] The YMCA rental of space in Chandler Hall facilities provides the local community with ready access to exercise equipment and healthy living activities. I personally use these facilities for weight management and strength maintenance. Like many of this YMCA’s clients I am an older retired individual, who would find it a hardship to seek these services elsewhere.
These services are invaluable to people across the full spectrum of ages.
[IF APPLICABLE] My [wife, mother, etc.] used Chandler Hall’s in-residence and rehabilitation services after she broke her femur. She enjoyed the friendly staff and patient comradery while recovering from her injury. Chandler Hall is her Number One ‘go-to’ facility for this type care.
Chandler Hall is a unique institution that should be preserved as a nonprofit because of the significant value it provides to Newtown Borough, Newtown Township, Bucks County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, unless clear and specific protections are imposed as conditions of any sale or reclassification.
Therefore, I believe it is incumbent upon the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General to protect and uphold Chandler Hall’s current Quaker-based mission and operating structure as part of any decision involving its reclassification or sale.
I respectfully request a favorable decision that protects Chandler Hall’s residents, employees, community services and charitable mission.
Sincerely,
