October 2019 Newtown Township Police Report: Peak Season for "Struck Deer" & Domestic Abusers Must Surrender Guns!

In October, the Newtown Police Department responded to 1,803 total calls, 372 (21%) of which were in Wrightstown Township (Newtown Police provides services to both Newtown and Wrightstown Townships).

Traffic Citations Down for Month of October

The Newtown Police Department issued a total of 151 traffic citations in October 2019. 58 (38%) of these were for speeding, especially on Swamp Road and Newtown Bypass.

Peak Season for Struck Deer

I notice that the Police Department issued a “Deer Alert” on Twitter. I especially like the graphic image included in the tweet.

Act 29 Non-Compliance

ACT 79 Non-Compliance is a new category added to the “disturbances” section of the Police Report. This act went into effect on April 10, 2019 and deals primarily with increased safety provisions related to firearms in both Protection from Abuse and misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence to help prevent domestic violence homicides.

Gov. Wolf said: “The incidents of domestic violence where guns are involved in our commonwealth prove that this commonsense law is an important step to protect victims of domestic abuse, save lives, and hold abusers accountable for their actions.”

September 2019 Newtown Township Police Report: Speeding Citations Drop

In September, the Newtown Police Department responded to 1,794 total calls, 365 (20%) of which were in Wrightstown Township (Newtown Police provides services to both Newtown Township and Wrightstown).

Traffic Citations Down for Month Of September

The Newtown Police Department issued a total of 111 traffic citations in September 2019 compared to 158 in August - a 30% drop. 45 (41%) of these were for speeding compared to 55 (35%) in August. That's the fewest number of monthly speeding citations this year.

Traffic Citations Down for Month Of August

The 3rd wave of the 2019 "Aggressive Driver Campaign" is over! The Newtown Police Department issued a total of 158 traffic citations in August 2019 compared to 244 in July - a 35% drop. 55 (35%) of these were for speeding compared to 115 (47%) in July.

July 2019 Newtown Township Police Report: 3d Wave of Aggressive Driver Campaign, Missing Persons, Terroristic Threats

Newtown Township Police Lieutenant Jason Harris presented the Calls Report for July 2019 at the August 14, 2019, Board of Supervisors meeting. The following is a summary. Note: Not all calls are listed. Download the full (redacted) report here.

In July, the Newtown Police Department responded to 1,694 total calls, 292 (17%) of which were in Wrightstown Township (Newtown Police provides services to both Newtown Township and Wrightstown).

Traffic Enforcement Targets Swamp and Eagle Roads

The Newtown Police Department issued a total of 244 traffic citations in July 2019 compared to 143 in May. 115 (47%) of these were for speeding compared to 52 (36%) in June. Starting on July 8, 2019, the Newtown Township Police participated in the 3rd wave of the 2019 "Aggressive Driver Campaign" with specific enforcement on Swamp and Eagle Roads. The second wave of the year's Aggressive Driving campaign was conducted March 18 to April 28 (read “March 2019 Newtown Police Report: Crack Down on Aggressive Driving!”).

Police focused on heavy truck enforcement as well. Lieutenant Harris reported that 12 hours were devoted to commercial vehicle enforcement.

June 2019 Newtown Township Police Report: Traffic Citations Drop, But Don’t Get Complacent!

In June, the Newtown Police Department responded to 1,603 total calls, 361 (23%) of which were in Wrightstown Township (Newtown Police provides services to both Newtown Township and Wrightstown).

Traffic Citations Drop  In June, But...

The Newtown Police Department issued a total of 168 traffic citations in June compared to 208 in May. Less than one-third (52) of these were for speeding. See the chart below.

The drop in speeding citations from May to June was dramatic as evident in the following chart.

Third Time’s a Charm!

However, Newtown Township Police Chief Hearn confirmed at the July 10, 2019, BOS meeting that his department began a THIRD round of aggressive driving enforcement starting on July 8 and ending on August 25, 2019.

According to a report in Newtown Patch (here), “The focus will be on heavy truck enforcement, red light running, tailgating, the Move Over law, and speeding. Other unsafe driving behaviors, such as driving too fast for conditions, texting, careless driving, and Work Zone Safety violations, will be included.”
