Chandler Hall—a long-standing nonprofit, Quaker-affiliated senior care and hospice community—is in the process of being sold to CIG/99 Barclay Propco LLC.
CIG/99 Barclay Propco LLC is a private, for-profit real estate holding entity structured to acquire and hold physical real estate assets, not senior care communities.
It is likely, therefore, that the sale would result in the Chandler Hall property being converted into a for-profit senior living housing complex.
The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, or OAG, must review this transaction to ensure that it does not adversely affect the health needs of the community.
More Than a Senior Care Community
The sale may affect other important community services.
Not only does Chandler Hall offer health care to Newtown-area seniors, it also hosts a YMCA gym and daycare center that rents space at the site.
At the gym, I have heard several fellow seniors voice concerns about its future should the sale go through. The YMCA's lease ends in November.
We are concerned that the lease may not be offered again, or that a rate increase might cause the YMCA to opt out of signing a new lease.
In Newtown, there are no real facilities offering seniors the kinds of services provided by the YMCA gym. The childcare center is also a welcome benefit for working families.
It would be a shame if these facilities were no longer available.
There Is Still Time to Voice Your Concern
I have been advised that there is still time to submit a comment opposing this sale to the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General.

If the OAG decides to approve this transaction, I hope that the new owners of Chandler Hall will continue to offer the YMCA its gym and daycare facilities at the site for a reasonable fee.
